Education Policy Internships

The mission of the Progressive Policy Institute is to define and promote a new progressive politics for the 21st century. The Institute's core philosophy stems from the belief that America is ill-served by an obsolete left-right debate that is out of step with the powerful forces reshaping our society and economy. The Institute believes in adapting the progressive tradition in American politics to the realities of the Information Age by advocating a Third Way approach beyond the liberal impulse to defend the bureaucratic status quo and the conservative bid to dismantle government.

The 21st Century Schools Project at the Progressive Policy Institute develops public policies to modernize American schools and ensure that all students are prepared for success in the knowledge economy. Through research, publications and articles, and work with policymakers, the Project supports initiatives to increase accountability and equity, improve standards, and increase choice and innovation in public education.

The 21st Century Schools Project offers substantive internships. Interns are not relegated to paperwork and data entry, but are instead offered of a range of work experiences. In addition to conducting data analysis and guided research on a variety of topics, interns are encouraged to pursue their own areas of interest. There are opportunities to have articles published and interns are expected to draft their own policy briefs. Because these projects are challenging, co-workers offer their expertise for direction and support.

Interns are invited to participate in policy meetings, often in-depth discussions of controversial issues, with members of other political organizations, state and national legislators, and international delegations.

The 21st Century Schools Project prepares interns for careers in the policy and political arena. In recent years, interns have gone on to teaching positions or to work with consulting and policy organizations around DC, including The Council for Basic Education, The National Institute for Literacy, The Progressive Policy Institute, and Westat; numerous legislative offices on Capitol Hill; and the White House, as well as to pursue graduate degrees at top policy and education programs.
