New Threats and Tough Choices
A Discussion of Obama's First Defense Budget

The Progressive Policy Institute (PPI) hosted a panel of defense experts and top defense spending decision-makers for a discussion of how to make a smarter defense budget in a time of both war and economic crisis. The event featured a keynote address by Rep. John Spratt, (D-S.C.), chairman, House Budget Committee and member, House Armed Services Committee. Spratt was introduced by PPI President Will Marshall.

The event also included a panel discussion with: Gordon Adams, American University; David Scruggs, Renaissance Advisors, formerly of the Center for Strategic and International Studies; and Russell Rumbaugh, military legislative assistant for Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.), formerly a resource analyst in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The panel was moderated by Jim Arkedis, director, PPI's National Security Project.
